Emissions Inspection Station in Greensburg

In Pennsylvania, an emissions inspection is required in certain regions to meet air quality improvement goals. Vehicles registered in Westmoreland County and other counties in the Pittsburgh Area are required to undergo an emissions inspection once a year, before or at the same time as the PA safety inspection.

Your registration renewal notice will inform you when it's time for your state inspection and emissions inspection. You must go to a certified emissions inspection station for your test.

Types of Emissions Inspections

There are several types of emissions tests

• On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) Check: During this test, the technicians links a cable to the vehicle's on-board computer using a data link connector. Information from the OBD is downloaded and accessed to see how well the emissions system is working. If there is a problem, the OBD will generate a trouble code. This type of test can be performed on most 1996 and newer model year gasoline powered vehicles, light duty trucks and vans weighing 8,5000 pounds and less.
• Tailpipe Test: The technician uses a tailpipe probe to retrieve a sample of exhaust and measures the amount of pollutants produced at idle with an emissions analyzer. This type of test can be performed on many gasoline powered vehicles, light duty trucks and vans depending on year. Some stations use a Dynamometer during this test.
• Gas Cap Test: This functional test is performed to ensure harmful fumes aren't escaping the gas tank. During this type of emissions test, the gas cap is removed and inserted into a special device that applied pressure to it. The gas cap passes if it holds pressure for approximately 45 seconds and it can be determined that fumes are or aren't escaping.
• Visual Anti-Tampering Check: This test checks for emission control components installed by the manufacturer. During this test, a certified technicians will looks at the catalytic converter, exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve, positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve, fuel inlet restrictor, air pump, and evaporative control system components to determine if everything is connected properly and is correct for the vehicle model.
